2033: Playoffs #8
July 28th, 2010 · Comments Off
Game 7 of the 2033 Weaver Series featured a classic head-to-head matchup of pitching aces: Orcas RHP Dizzy Dean vs White Sharks RHP Derek Ballinger. Dean and Ballinger did not disappoint, as each posted nearly identical statlines: 8 IP, 3 H, and 5 SO. Luckily for Orcas fans, 2 of the team’s 3 hits were solo home runs by 3B Joe Oswalt and SS John Halbriter. Dean exited the game in the top of the 9th, and relievers RHP Hank Sweeney and LHP Pete James nailed down the 2-0 win. Downtown Edmonton, packed with thousands of championship starved fans, erupted into a spontaneous frenzy. The franchise’s dark days were now just a distant memory, and these Edmonton Orcas were, at last, Weaver Champions!

2033: Playoffs #7

UK soccer commentator Ian Darke said it best: “You could not write a script like this!” The 2033 Weaver Series is now tied 3-3 after Edmonton rebounded to win Games 5 and 6. In Game 5, the small contingent of Orcas fans that made the trip to upstate New York started packing after Amity scored 2 runs in the bottom of the 5th. Edmonton staved off elimination, though, thanks to 2 2-run homers by SS John Halbriter and C John Blue. In Game 6, CF Bernard Spongberg reprised his late-inning postseason heroics by slugging a 3-run HR in the bottom of the 7th. Spongberg’s homer capped the team’s rally from a 4-2 deficit, with the Orcas finally winning the game 5-4.

After splitting a pair of games in Amity, the underdog White Sharks now find themselves 1 win away from capturing their record 6th Weaver Cup. RHP Dizzy Dean, Edmonton’s BLCS MVP, started Game 3 and pitched a masterpiece complete game: 1 run on 6 hits, with 8 strikeouts. However, Amity rebounded in Game 4 with a crushing 5-run rally in the bottom of the 8th to win 10-4.
